“Big Bubble”

Explore our Nike selection and the Nike universe here.

The stories around some never-released Nike and Jordan sneakers are classic history book material. With an archive probably more extensive than we could ever imagine, the (re-)release of the Air Max 1 "Big Bubble" feels like a massive moment for the culture. While many don't know the pre-'87s story, the truth is pretty simple. The window was too big, and technology wasn't ready in the mid'80s. While production was already rolling and a few pairs made it to the market on March 26th, 1987, Nike quickly switched to a smaller window to counter the cracking of the Air window in cold weather.

Failure? Absolutely not! Just learning and taking the next step and do what has to be done to proceed.

Finding one of these rare pairs is almost impossible, even less wearable, so it's with a warm collector's heart that the Air Max 1 "Big Bubble" returns on March 26th, 2023, a shoe that long has held the reputation as one of the most sought-after silhouettes in the sneaker game.

For the return of the AM86, SNS and Nike have joined forces to highlight the immense story behind the first-ever Air Max and the early trials and tribulations of the Air Max legacy. Together with French artists we have paid homage to the archival gem by highlighting the power of failing, as there is no such thing as failure, it's a way of learning. French producer Junior Alaprod Zanmi, visual creative Sara Sadik, photographer Émile-Samory FOFANA, and Olympic Gold Medalist Enzo Lefort bring to the table what the Air Max story is about: starting somewhere, overcoming hurdles, creativity, progressiveness, and culture. Always in motion to inspire the next generation.
