AXEL SELFIE
SNS Meets: Axel Boman

In our new series 'SNS Meets,' we sat down with DJ and music producer Axel Boman to talk known and unknown facts about his music, Stockholm, touring the world and everything in-between.

Axel Boman made his breakthrough in 2010 with his Pampa Records debut “Holy Love” including "Purple Drank," a banger that brought Axel to the map and around the world. Since then he has released numerous records on countless labels such as DFA, Permanent Vacation, Hypercolour and his own Studio Barnhus imprint, which he is running together with Petter Nordkvist and Kornél Kovács. We are happy that Axel found the time to answer SNS a few questions and curate a Playlist of songs he is currently digging.

Mogge Meets: Axel Boman Interview

Mogge: I heard you do Jiu-Jitsu, is that right? Axel Boman: Yes i do.. poorly but enthusiastically!

M: Is it right that you did the score and the voice-over you hear riding the escalator at Kålmården (A wildlife park south of Stockholm). Rumor has it that during the recording of the voice-over, you apparently broke some wind and that can be heard if you pay attention? Is this true Axel? AB: Haha wow someone dug deep! Ok early on having a studio i got offered so many random sound jobs which was great for a poor art student dreaming of playing at panorama bar. One of those jobs was to record a "welcome to Kolmården"-track. We got a manuscript, were asked to add animal sounds and my actor friend Johannes read it. As a gimmick i used to always add this specific fart sound in every sound job i did, the trick was to hide it so well that you only heard it if you knew where it was. This is over 10 years ago though and i doubt Kolmården still uses this!

M: Is it true you are a trained chef and went to art school in Gothenburg? AB: Yeah baby, my mise en place is flawless. I have master of fine arts from Valand Academy of Gothenburg University

M: *Your Mom is an actress and your dad is a scenograph aka set builder, can you elaborate a bit? * AB: Yes, my mom is an actress and I acted in tons of stuff before i got old enough to protest. My dad is a set designer working with scenography and he dabbles in architecture otherwise its correct! he's everything from designing festival tente, art exhibitions, movies, millions of theatre plays and thousands of "krog-show's" for Swedens pop elite. Oh yeah, and joe labero's shows!

M: You are a traveling DJ and currently on tour with Kornel. Do you ever get sick of traveling? AB: Travel is horror. I've managed to make it slightly more fun by getting a Nintendo Switch! But the only thing that really helps is gin&tonic.

M: How does a day on tour look like? AB: Arrive to destination, meet a guy from the car service with a sign that says "Alex", check in to hotel and complain about getting a room with 2 single beds, have dinner with a promotor and his (always a "he") friends hopefully we share some standard values in life and get along fine, go back to hotel to check the records and usb's, get picked up to go to the club/festival, drink 3 big tequila shots, play music & dance, stumble back to hotel, forget to hang up the "dont disturb"-sign, get angry that you wake up too early when the cleaning people knock on the door and you cant fall back to sleep, get picked up by a new guy from the car service but you still think its the same and pick up conversation where you last left off, realize in security at the airport that you forgot your charger to either computer or phone or both, buy new at airport, buy a beer in the most saloon looking place at the airport.

M: The compilation Studio Barnhus Vol. 1 released earlier this year and has been the soundtrack of this summer at our location in Stockholm. It’s really a good body of work from various producers. Could you explain the work process and how it came about? AB: We've been playing with the idea of a compilation for a long time and when we decided to finally do it we realized that it was by far the biggest project we've ever taken on. Endless mail threads and so many hard decisions to take. The most fun part was to listen to music together with petter and kornél of course. As it usually does when we work together, things fell into place by itself, we have a high level of trust when it comes to each others taste. I hope we can make this a bi-annual thing.

M: What’s the bigger enjoyment, to create or curate music? AB: Good question! curate music is all fun. making music is all pain. But once a record is out, your own release will be the most rewarding i think.

M: The best music 2018? AB: Dj koze, Kids see ghost, Ramzi, stuff from mood hut records, höga nord, wajatta, marie davidson.

M: What artist, label, producer to look out for 2019? AB: Your planet is next, Pedrodollar, Lukas Nystrand von Unge, Bella boo, Sofia Kourtesis, Laurence Guy are some peepz that have amazing music coming on studio barnhus soon! and i finally have a lot of music coming!!!!!

M: Did you ever do mixtapes when you were younger? AB: Yes! I loved making tapes and bring to school. later making CDs with elaborate cover art and purposeful playlists. I guess thats what i still do now!

M: Like real mixtapes on tape or compact disc and what was on them? AB: My tapes had a mix of hiphop and trance music. Looking at the current state of club music I was obviously way ahead of my time!

M: Any guilty pleasures musically? AB: Guess trance music would be a guilty pleasure before but since its the current cool I can just bathe in it haha.

M: Is there such a thing as a perfect playlist? If, what is the secret? ;) AB: It depends on who hears it and what the reaction is, a perfectly selected playlist could have life altering consquences!

M: You have been asked to do a playlist for us. Your train of thought here pls. AB: Its music i want to cook food to, listen while driving or turn a frown upside down. Feel good music from a wide range of genres but with a common feel-good and melodic vibe. Maybe a bit heavy on the "house" side of things but hey, im Axel boman?!

M: What sneakers are currently in your rotation? AB: I always have a ton of Converse and Stan smith. I have a strange love for Fila shoes too! And a million pairs of nike running shoes, usually the lightweight kind that pack easily in a weekend bag.
