On-demand viewing has taken over the ever-oh-so-hard quest for which movie to pick at your local rental spot; pop culture must-sees are right there, just one click away (and maybe a credit card swipe). But the point is the gap between compelling and addictive movie-watching frenzies and binging a series is closing. Since we roll with good blockbusters as well as the miraculous times of streaming services, we asked our cinematic, big screen, and small screen-versed staff around the world for their picks of favorite shows (see here which favorite movies they selected). Again, you will get a good amount of diversity with a slight tendency for iconic dramas but see for yourself.
SNS Stockholm
One of us had to pick the current you-have-to-see-it-for-yourself shows, Tiger King on Netflix has been Twitter trending since days, and since Swedes don’t follow trends, SNS Stockholm picked it first (irony off). The show follows controversial big cat owner and animal park mullet-rocking head-honcho Joe Exotic through an absurd string of unbelievable events, including a murder-for-hire plot.
SNS London
With Rick and Morty, Sneakersnstuff London picks their go-to animated series, which follows alcoholic yet genius yet careless scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith. Throughout now four seasons, the mad scientist and his not-so-bright but trying sidekick head out for adventures through intergalactic dimensions and space travel, meeting all kinds of weird creatures, observing otherworldly species, and interacting with potentially harmful experiments by Rick. At first sight, this might just be a silly sci-fi adventure series, but the show reveals its endlessly creative and versatile character pretty fast.
SNS Paris
SNS Paris opts for THE classic during isolation time and has picked Tony, Dr. Melfi, Paulie and the rest of The Sopranos as their stay at home television show. Based around New Jersey-based mob boss, family man, and “waste management consultant” Tony Soprano, the show was and still is a game-changing experience aired first back in 1999 on HBO.
SNS Berlin
Sneakersnstuff Berlin travels to the ‘60s for their pick, selecting Mad Man as their WFH, oh no, stay at home series to watch while we are all kicking it in our own four walls. Telling the story of Donald Draper, an executive in one of New York’s most prestigious ad agencies Sterling Cooper, Mad Man digs deep in Madison Avenue history and the struggles that come with it, you name it, it’s in there, smoking, drinking, womanizing, the whole shebang.
SNS New York
The story of Omar, Stringer Bell, and McNulty is one of television’s brightest moments (of many). Still, The Wire, picked by SNS New York, has that golden age feeling, why so many people became addicted to watching TV series. Set in Baltimore (yes, the city that also saved the Air Force 1, but on that topic more later), The Wire centers around the buzzing drug scene and the microcosm encompassing it, law enforcement, corrupt politicians, drug addicts and a slang-heavy lingo that you want to have in your life. Must see.
SNS Los Angeles
Rather new on our Netflix radar is British show Sex Education, picked by the staff of our West Coast location in Venice Beach. Centering around teenager Otis Milburn and his mother, sex therapist Jean Milburn (played by the fantastic Gillian Anderson), the show follows Otis, an awkward high-school student, setting up an underground sex therapy clinic in school together with classmate Maeve. Because of his upbringing, Otis is kind of an expert on the subject, handing out advice, while Maeve collects the checks.
SNS Tokyo
Similar to Sex Education, Watchmen is new, preferably new, compared to The Wire or Sopranos, at least. HBO’s adaptation from 2019 was selected by the store staff in Tokyo and created by LOST showrunner Damon Lindelof. Watchmen is set in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws. Similar to the complex graphic novel of the same name, the show is a visual rumpus following Angela Abar, a former detective who is fighting against these mask-wearing vigilantes racist group known as the 7th Cavalry together with the Tulsa Police Force, who also sport masks to protect their own identities.
